The contrast of the weight of reality on earth and in heaven
is described by C.S. Lewisin his book ‘ THE GREAT DIVORCE’. It is not that the weight of ‘a leaf - a young tender beech-leaf, - was heavier than a sack of coal’ because our reality here on earth does not bear any weight, but rather because there is an expectation of a much greater reality.
I am reminded of this contrast through the process of my work, the contrast between the shell of an object and the mass which once occupied the space within, and perhaps expectations of something yet to come. At the same time, there is an oxymoron: the awkward physical presence of the paper shell object is part of sadness and joy of being here and now.
